Ongoing collaboration between the National Research Council of Canada and the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology was boosted this week when their representatives signed a Letter of Intent to promote and fund innovation-driven collaborations.

The letter was signed by Mr. Xiaming Jin, Director General of International Cooperation for the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology and Bogdan Ciobanu, Vice-president of the Industrial Research Assistance Program at the National Research Council of Canada. The signing took place as part of the 6th meeting of the Canada-China Joint Committee on Science Technology and Innovation Cooperation held in Ottawa on February 24 and 25.

"This agreement provides a framework to facilitate the promotion, selection and funding of collaborative innovation projects between Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises and their Chinese counterparts," explains Mr. Ciobanu. "It represents another strong vehicle through which the National Research Council of Canada opens doors to enhance the global competitiveness of Canadian businesses."

Funding for successful collaborations will come from the Canadian International Innovation Program, formally launched last spring. It is Canada's latest initiative to accelerate collaborative industrial research and development projects with high potential for commercialization between Canada and partner countries. The program is delivered by the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program and its network of technology advisors and the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service.

The National Research Council is Canada's go-to research and technology organization. Working with clients and partners, we provide innovation support, strategic research, and scientific and technical services.

The Ministry of Science and Technology is responsible for coordinating science and technology activities across the People's Republic of China.
