Ideation Programs - where breakthroughs begin
The NRC recruits forward thinkers who work at the leading edge of research and technology to set a new standard for innovation. Recently launched, our Ideation Programs provide financial support for our researchers and scientists to pursue self-directed research in collaboration with our partners, and test transformative ideas that have the potential to develop into future disruptive technologies.
Two funds have been created under the NRC Ideation Programs to support early-stage research:
- New Beginnings Fund
- Collaborative (Small Teams) Ideation Fund
New Beginnings Fund
Launched in July 2018, the New Beginnings Fund was created to support individual, small-scale, exploratory research projects with an external collaborator over a period of one year. NRC researchers and scientists can apply for up to $25,000 in funding, and their partners can receive up to $25,000 in grant funding, to investigate ideas.
Each year, a new call for project proposals is issued, providing a new beginning for transformative ideas at the NRC.
Collaborative (Small Teams) Ideation Fund
The Collaborative (Small Teams) Ideation Fund lets small teams dig deeper into breakthrough research ideas that could help change or disrupt what is possible for tomorrow. The Collaborative (Small Teams) Fund will provide funding to six teams of NRC researchers, at the rate of two teams annually, to work with their academic and industry partners on three-year projects that have the potential to develop into an NRC program.
The most promising exploratory projects for both funds will be selected through a peer review.
The Ideation Programs are two of many initiatives NRC researchers can participate in to foster collaborative work and build science excellence.
