Technology development matrix

The NRC is mobilizing resources to create a centralized database that gathers together clearly attributable and continuously updated data on technical attributes and cost parameters for each energy storage technology of interest. This data will include parameters for the current state of the art and projections for future technical attributes, performance and costs as technology, manufacturing processes and markets mature. These data will be presented and compared to transparently show how far each technology is along its development path, and what is required to reach maturity.

With this tool, decision makers will have a better understanding of what the various technologies offer and have the means for objective comparisons.

Lithium-ion Battery Industrial R&D Group

While the market for lithium-ion batteries is expected to continue its growth, there exists a need for precompetitive and collaborative R&D activities to align, develop, accelerate, integrate and/or industrialise lithium battery-related technologies and raw material supplies in Canada. This initiative is aimed at developing and supporting the Canadian supply chain in graphite and lithium, specifically for lithium-ion battery applications.

In collaboration with industry members, this initiative will:

  • Conduct technology watch of graphite and lithium materials and LIB trends
  • Develop and analyze product specifications and characteristics for cathode and anode components
  • Characterize and benchmark raw material supplies
  • Optimize materials for increased performance and lower costs

All current and prospective members of the raw material supply chain for LIBs are encouraged to participate, along with industrial users of input materials who are interested in accessing a high-quality Canadian supply.

Vanadium Flow Battery Industrial R&D Group

Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFBs) are a steadily developing energy storage technology predicted to play a significant role for grid scale energy storage markets in the future. They are particularly advantageous in the ~10 kWh to 80 MWh range for load leveling and peak shaving given their competitive advantage in longer discharge scenarios (>2hrs). In North America alone, the need for these services is expected to grow to approximately 1700 MWh by 2026, with some predictions reaching 9000 MWh.

The Vanadium Flow Battery Industrial R&D Group (VFBTec) is a multiparty research project focused on reducing specific technology risks and costs in VRFBs. Specific targets include:

  • Lowering the cost of the vanadium-based electrolytes, including the optimization of production processes and purity levels
  • Establishing accelerated testing, performance and lifetime protocols
  • Assisting VRFB developers in cost reduction of components such as electrodes and separators

All current and prospective members of the raw material supply chain for VRFBs are encouraged to participate, along with component developers and industrial users of V205 and electrolyte.

Canadian Energy Storage Roadmap

The sustainable deployment of effective Energy Storage (ES) solutions has been hindered by a lack of stakeholder coordination to understand the impact of local market dynamics and unique regulatory structures.

This initiative aims to understand market potential, roadblocks and actions required at the planning, procurement, rate treatment, interconnection, market, and regulations steps for adopting ES technologies in Canada by 2021.

The Roadmap, written in chapters addressing many jurisdictions throughout Canada, will use a holistic approach to set the goals and direction for the ES sector. The Ontario and Alberta chapters are currently under way and NRC is actively engaging technology developers, utilities, project owners, financiers and other interested stakeholders to participate.

Stationary Energy Storage (ES) Systems: Collecting ES demonstration data to support codes, standards and regulations

The project will identify guidelines for the successful adoption of energy storage technologies. Enhancing consistency and closing gaps in codes and standards is expected to reduce the full-cycle costs and implementation risks associated with energy storage systems.

We are currently recruiting members for our Codes and Standards Advisory Panel, to help develop the roadmap for energy storage codes and standards, and close critical gaps. We are also recruiting demonstration project owners who want to analyse their project's operation, and learn from other projects in Canada and around the world.
