The NRC Construction Research Centre is active in the innovation of buildings — residential, commercial and institutional — as well as in civil engineering infrastructure. In collaboration with stakeholders and clients, we support the industry by

The NRC Construction Research Centre provides cost-effective research- and technology-based solutions to Canada's construction industry related to the design, manufacture, performance and maintenance of materials and structures. The NRC advantage
The NRC Construction Research Centre focuses on advancing construction technology in the core areas of building envelope and materials, fire safety, indoor environment, intelligent building operations, urban infrastructure, and building regulations.
We work with all players on the industry's supply chain, from building and infrastructure owners, to manufacturers and designers, builders and contractors, industry associations, other government departments, and regulatory authorities to identify needs and set mission-oriented projects. We engage in multiple forms of collaborations to deliver product development and evaluation, demonstrations and validations, standardized testing, and model codes development. We also offer a number of technical services that include fee-for-service testing, calibration and consulting support.

Technical and advisory services
The NRC Construction Research Centre contributes to safety and efficiency in construction through product evaluation services. The Canadian Construction Materials Centre can help you determine the suitability of innovative products in accordance with code requirements.
The Canadian Codes Centre provides technical and administrative support to the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes and its related committees, which are responsible for the development of the national model construction codes of Canada.
The soundPATHS software web application predicts the direct and flanking transmission of sound through wood-framed construction according to the requirements in the proposed National Building Code of Canada 2015. It presents findings in a form that can be used as a framework to design wood-framed assemblies.
Canadians spend 80-90% of their time indoors, making indoor air quality an important issue. To help building designers and material manufacturers keep the levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as low as possible indoors, NRC, along with stakeholders and partners, developed an indoor air quality prediction software called IA-Quest (Indoor Air Quality Emission Simulation Tool). IA- Quest predicts the emission of VOCs from building materials and furnishings, helping building designers select low-emission materials and effective ventilation strategies.
The NRC Construction Research Centre maintains world-class research and technology development facilities in Ottawa, and can in some cases relocate testing equipment to work on location.
