Mosaic Capital Corporation
Mosaic Capital Corporation is an investment company which owns a portfolio of established businesses, and is principal of SmithLawCorp, which provides legal and strategic advice to select clients. Bill`s particular area of interest has been in start up and early stage businesses, although many of these have successfully developed into medium and large scale enterprises. Bill has experience in a wide range of domestic and international businesses with a focus on corporate finance, strategy and business development.
Bill is currently a director or board advisor of a number of listed companies and substantial private companies and trusts. Over the course of his 35 year career, he has been a board member or senior officer of more than 20 listed companies in international and domestic energy and energy services; finance; life sciences; construction materials; next generation networks; mining and other industries. At various times, he served as Executive Vice President of 3 companies and as Acting Executive Director of the Alberta Securities Commission.
In the not for profit sector, Bill is currently a director of Foundation CMG, which funds research chairs at universities globally, and he has previously served as a director of the Canadian Youth Business Foundation, the Kids Cancer Care Foundation, and REAP, a business association supporting local, sustainable businesses.
Bill received his BA in 1973 and his LLB in 1976, both from the University of Alberta. In January 2000, he was appointed Queen’s Counsel. He has presented seminars on business transactions and board governance for the Law Society of Alberta; the University of Calgary Haskayne School of Business; the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta and Federated Press. He practised law with McCarthy Tetrault LLP from 1987 until 2010.
