Austria is one of the centres of the international automotive industry, where both the supplier industry as well as the actual vehicle production, play an important role. The narrower “automotive branch” in Austria encompasses 700 companies and roughly 200,000 employees, with a total turnover of 43 billion euros, which makes it one of the most significant industry sectors. If pre- and postproduction are also considered, then a total of approximately 370,000 employees generate a turnover of 100 billion euros. This industry sector is thus responsible for 1 in 9 jobs in Austria.
The export rate of vehicles, motors and components produced in Austria each year totals over 99 %; the sector is thus the country’s second largest export factor following the engineering sector.
Nearly 250,000 vehicles as well as 2.4 million motors and transmissions are manufactured annually.
R&D expenditure in the automotive industry totals roughly 480 million euros. 80% of this amount is invested by foreign-owned companies. R&D employment in the automotive industry accounts for about 14% of the workforce, more than double the average of other industry sectors.
An ambitious research, development and innovation roadmap to transition Austria’s automotive sector towards automated vehicles was published in February 2016. Currently, two test tracks are being developed: one in Upper Austria with a focus on logistics and one in the province of Styria.
The Canadian Connected/ Automated Vehicle Mission will occur on the margins of the 4th International B2B Software Days 2017, an event focussed on digital business and finding international cooperation partners for research, technology and business projects with around 500 participants, two thirds of which are expected to originate from outside of Austria. With the help of delivered project ideas and expertise offered for R&D collaboration before the event it will be possible for each Canadian participant to initiate a collaborative project or to join a project with the partners form EUREKA/Eurostars network. The project/expertise-matchmaking with Austrian partners and other participants will be pre-arranged by organizers of the event as well as by Global Affairs Canada.
In collaboration with FFG (Austrian Research Promotion Agency), a private networking dinner will be offered to meet with the major local players (like AVL List, Magna Steyr, CROSS Industires, Voestalpine, Virtual Vehicle Institute, Austrian Institute of Technology etc.) to start to build networks. The mission’s activities aim to promote R&D and innovation partnerships, facilitate market access and promote opportunities for collaboration between Canadian and Austrian companies.

One of the main goals of the Mission is to generate successful EUREKA projects with Canadian and Austrian participants. For this purpose, the organizer of Software Days will collect project ideas from Austria and Canada until March 15 and distribute the received proposals among the registered participants at the event. Project preparation should start on site.
