Vice-President (on language training)
Dr. Ian Potter was appointed NRC's Vice President, Engineering in May 2011.
Prior to his appointment, Dr. Potter was Chief Operating Officer at Alberta Innovates – Technology Futures (AITF). During his 10 years at AITF and its predecessor, the Alberta Research Council (ARC), Dr. Potter held several leadership and management positions in energy, environment, greenhouse gas technology and human resources.
Before joining ARC, Dr. Potter was a senior research engineer with C-FER Technologies of Edmonton and served as an officer in the British Royal Navy. He was also an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Calgary and a marine engineering officer with Shell Tankers (U.K.).
Dr. Potter currently serves as First Vice-Chairman of the Canadian Association for the World Petroleum Council. He has also served as Chairman of the Board for the Canadian Centre for Unmanned Vehicles Systems, board member and Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee for the Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada and board member for C-FER Technologies (1999) Inc.
Dr. Potter received his Bachelor of Engineering in marine engineering from the Royal Naval Engineering College (Plymouth, U.K.), and Masters and PhD degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Calgary.
