Energy, Mining and Environment (EME) Research Centre
Mr. John Cigana is currently the Director General (acting) of the the Energy, Mining and Environment (EME) Research Centre.
Mr. Cigana joined the NRC in 2014 as Director of Research and Development (R&D) for the EME Research Center for the Greater Montreal directorate from Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies Canada, where he held several positions over his seventeen year tenure. Mr. Cigana was Vice-President of Business Development & Marketing, Vice-President of Technology & Process Development as well as the Director of Industrial Wastewater at the Veolia Water Research & Innovation Centre in Maisons-Laffitte (France).
Strongly involved in supporting innovation and technological development in the environmental sector for the past twenty years both in Europe and the Americas, Mr. Cigana has contributed to more than one hundred technical papers and publications on drinking water and wastewater treatment and has secured two patents in the water and wastewater field. He was also a columnist for "Source" magazine for over eight years, commenting quarterly on water and environmental issues.
As an active member of his community and environmental supporter by nature, Mr. Cigana has been serving on the Board of Directors for a neighborhood environmental Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) called "Ville en Vert" since 2011, and has recently joined the Board of Directors of the "Fondation Québécoise en Environnement", another environmental NGO.
Mr. Cigana has been a guest lecturer on water and wastewater treatment at École Polytechnique in Montreal, Institut National d’Agronomie-Paris-Grignon (INA-PG) and Université de Montréal. He has also served as a member of the Board of Directors at CEGEP Vanier, Montreal’s largest anglophone college, from 2010 to 2013.
Mr. John Cigana earned a BEng and a M.A.Sc. in Civil Engineering, specializing in Environmental Engineering, at École Polytechnique in Montreal. He has been a member of the "Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec" since 1995.
