On August 24, 2016, Iain Stewart became the 12th President of the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), the largest research organization of the Government of Canada.
Mr. Stewart was previously the Associate Secretary of the Treasury Board Secretariat, the Government of Canada's management board.
With respect to science, innovation, and economic policy, he was Assistant Deputy Minister of Policy, Associate Assistant Deputy Minister of Science and Innovation, and Secretary to the Federal Review of Support to Research and Development (known as the "Jenkins Panel") at the Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development of the Government of Canada.
Prior to that, Mr. Stewart supported industry, academic, and government researchers through a number of policy and program roles at Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and as Assistant Vice-President of Research at Dalhousie University.
Mr. Stewart is currently the Chair of the Heads of Federal Agencies and a member of a number of Deputy Minister Committees, including the Public Service Management Advisory Committee, Science, and Economic Trends and Policies, as well as a member of the Canada Research Coordinating Committee of funding agencies.
Born and raised in Nova Scotia, Mr. Stewart holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, a graduate diploma in Marine Policy, and a Masters of Public Administration.
