Fire resistance of FRP-reinforced concrete structural members

World-wide interest in the use of fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) reinforcement in concrete structures, as an alternative to traditional steel reinforcement, has increased significantly in recent years. FRP reinforcement has an advantage over steel in that it has high strength but does not corrode. While FRP reinforcement is mainly used in bridges, there is enormous potential for its use in multi-storey buildings, parking garages and industrial structures.

But before FRPs can be used in structural members in buildings, the ability of these members to meet stringent fire-resistance requirements must be established. At present, there is very little information available on the performance of FRP-reinforced structural members in fires.

In response to this need for more information, IRC's National Fire Laboratory is planning to undertake a joint research project to determine the fire resistance of FRP-reinforced concrete structural members under fire conditions. Collaborative partners are now being sought.
