Volume 18, Number 3
NRC’s Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2013. It has a quarter century of success in providing commercialization and regulatory compliance support for construction sector clients and partners. This milestone provides an opportunity to reflect on these successes, and to plan for growth.
A national compliance assessment service, CCMC evaluates construction products and systems for compliance with National Building Code (NBC) requirements and with provincial and territorial building regulations. These evaluations help manufacturers gain quicker market access for new and innovative products. They also provide technical confidence for designers and regulatory authorities to decide whether or not to specify and accept those products in construction projects.
CCMC has increased market access for innovative construction products through industry-supported research activities to establish benchmarks and develop new testing protocols to evaluate performance. In several instances, results have been submitted to the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes and have influenced code development.
CCMC by the Numbers
- 25 Years of service to Canadian construction industry
- 1850 Evaluations performed to date
- 250 Manufacturers served by CCMC
- 101 Technical Guides produced for innovative products
- 540 Products contained on the CCMC registry
As a founding member of the World Federation of Technical Assessment Organisations in 1996, and through involvement in international trade missions, CCMC has facilitated the introduction of Canadian building products and system in export markets.
For the past 25 years, CCMC has provided the Canadian construction industry with a competitive advantage. It will continue doing so by providing high quality evaluations for new and innovative products and systems, resulting in earlier product acceptance by building regulators and increasing market share.
New research initiatives at NRC will generate greater opportunities for manufacturers to develop innovative building products for energy efficiency, noise control, fire safety, indoor air quality, cladding systems and roofing technology.
CCMC is poised to play a major role in these fields as well as in evaluating innovative approaches to achieving energy targets in the National Energy Code for Buildings and recent requirements incorporated into Part 9 of the NBC. CCMC will continue working to develop enhanced evaluation procedures that enable companies to expedite their innovations to the marketplace.
