Method of making open cell material
This technology relates to the field of porous materials and in particular to a method of making open cell metallic or ceramic foams. Different approaches have been proposed for the fabrication of such porous materials, and in this case a dry powder mixture is used. The technology can be used in a variety of industries, for example orthopedic and dental implants, energy absorbers, charge carriers and electrodes for batteries, capillary pumps, heat exchangers for electronic cooling, catalyst support and filters in automotive applications to name a few.
This technology is available for licensing, or for further development through a collaborative research agreement with NRC. The business opportunity may be referred to by its NRC ID # 11290 & 11499
This innovation can be applied to almost any industry that requires permeable porous metals. Foams could be used for example in heat pipes for electronic cooling, sound absorbers, bone reconstruction, crash absorbers, orthopedic and dental devices to name but a few.
How it works
Developments in the field of porous metals have helped the commercialization of devices in various applications from batteries to implants. Cost efficient production processes have enabled their acceptance in several industrial sectors such as biomedical, computer, filtration and chemical. This innovation is unique in that it is flexible and allows the production of permeable materials with high surface area. More particularly, the process allows producing foams using different types of metals including copper, nickel, titanium and titanium alloys, iron and steel. The method can yield foams with porosities ranging from 40%-90%. The material produced can be fully porous and deposed as coating on other materials.
