Stacked coil array for magnetic resonance experiments

Highlights

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a medical device that uses a magnetic field and the natural resonance of atoms in the body to obtain images of human tissues. The primary functioning parts of an MRI system include an external magnet, gradient coils, RF equipment, and a computer. In an MRI system, the RF array coil provides signal-to-noise and parallel MRI benefits. This innovation provides an optimal size and layout of RF array elements to minimize coupling, and provide optimal SNR and parallel MRI at a particular depth of interest within the body.

Technology transfer

This technology is available for licensing, or for further development through a collaborative research agreement with NRC. The business opportunity may be referred to by its NRC ID # 11463.

Market applications

This innovation is specifically for the health sector and its use of Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines and Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) machines.

How it works

This technology relates to the surface or volume array coil designs for MRI and MRS systems by using multiple coil elements and tuning them to a common frequency so they receive signals at the same time and in the same way. By changing how surface loop coils are currently used, improvements are possible in the homogeneity and signal-to- noise at a desired depth of MRI/MRS while allowing an improvement in G-factor.

Benefits

This innovation is specifically for the health sector and its use of Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines and Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) machines. The most notable advantages are:

  • the speed at which the image is taken;
  • the image quality at a particular depth within the body.
