The 2010 Code documents are available as encrypted PDF files; they are unlocked when you log in to the CODES-GUIDES Online Library and activate your subscriptions. You will need to install a plug-in to unlock the documents. For more details, see the Minimum Requirements and Installation sections of your User Manual.

The electronic format allows for a number of useful features such as hyperlinks and instant search capability that are not possible with the paper format. In addition, because the same files were used to prepare the printed Codes, the electronic documents preserve the same layout as the printed documents.

Types of access

Single User, Online Subscription

You must have Internet access to register, activate and view the online publications.

• You need to register your unique User ID and a Password in order to log in to the CODES-GUIDES Online Library and view your publications.
• This type of access allows you to view the publications online from any computer connected to the Internet (Mac or PC) anywhere in the world.
• Access to the publications is limited to the period of time specified by your subscription term - 10 days, 1 year, or 5 years. The clock starts on the day of activation.

Single User, Downloadable

You must have Internet access to register, activate and download the publications.

• You need to register your unique User ID and a Password in order to log in to the CODES-GUIDES Online Library and download your publications.
• Once the document is activated and downloaded, you can view the publications offline, while not connected to the Internet.
• Activation is computer-specific. This means the document cannot be viewed on a different computer.

Concurrent User, Online Subscription (2010 Code Documents only)

Concurrent User licenses allow a number of users to access Code documents simultaneously. The number of users is limited to the number of licenses purchased by your organization for a specified registered location:

• Each organization may have one or more registered locations or offices.
• Each registered location is determined by a single IP address. It must be a static IP address, usually a firewall, a proxy or a gateway IP address “visible” via the Internet.
• Each organization must appoint a Concurrent User Administrator to manage subscriptions for registered locations. The Concurrent User Administrator must register a unique User ID and a Password in order to log in to the CODES-GUIDES Online Library and activate publications for the organization.

Concurrent User licenses allow users to:

• View publications online from any computer (Mac or PC) connected to the Internet only from a registered site. The users do not need a User ID and Password to view the publications.
• Access the publications for a limited period of time specified by the subscription term - 1 year or 5 years. The clock starts on the day of activation.

The Concurrent User access is available only to organizations.

Search

Since the documents are in PDF format, use built-in Acrobat Reader functionality to search for terms within each document. See Acrobat Reader help for detailed information on searching PDF documents.

Updates

With CODES-GUIDES Online Library subscriptions, you always have access to up-to-date publications. Updates include any approved revisions and errata to the National Codes and the Provincial Codes. Your main Library page will show the latest document, as well as all previous printings of this document. A Revisions and Errata section at the beginning of each Code lists the changes that have been made since the text was first published.

Printing

You cannot print the content of the documents, as printing is disabled for the Codes and Guides. You can copy and paste excerpts into a word-processing application, such as MS Word.

Copying

The publications to which you have subscribed are copyrighted by the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) and protected by Canadian Copyright Law and international treaty provisions. Your right to reproduce portions of the documents is limited by the License Agreement: please read it carefully before copying any extracts. Such extracts may only be incorporated into a single new document and must not be altered in any way that could affect their meaning. The source of an extract must be acknowledged.

How to Copy Content

You can copy document extracts (text, tables, figures, intent and application statements) into any word processing or clipboard software using the Adobe Reader/Acrobat or Operating System built-in functionality:

1. Text only: highlight the extract with the cursor and press the "Ctrl" and "c" keys simultaneously, or select "Edit" then "Copy" from the menu bar. This method does not preserve exact formatting of the content.
2. Text, tables, figures, equations, etc.: scroll to the page/content that needs to be copied and use your OS screen capture tool, such as Snipping Tool (Windows 7 and Vista) or Alt + PrintScrn key (Windows XP). This method copies content as an image and preserves full formatting as it appears in the document.
