The Synthesis Telescope and 26-m Telescope are both involved in major survey projects that use the majority of the available observing time. However, some time is also available for external observers via a competitive, peer-reviewed process. At present there is no deadline for proposals: those received are dealt with on a first come, first served basis, and telescope time is allocated as other scheduling demands allow. A full synthesis observation requires twelve 12-hr sessions, typically obtained every 4 days; i.e., over a period of 48 days. Other observing strategies may be employed if required. Data are typically edited, calibrated, and processed to raw images by DRAO staff. Attendance at DRAO by the observer is thus not required, but is strongly encouraged, especially for students.
