Centre of the Universe (Astronomy Interpretive Centre)
Star trails over the dome of the Plaskett Telescope. In operation since May 6th, 1918, the Plaskett is the centrepiece of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory - a national historic site of Canada.
Open your eyes to the skies by visiting our astronomy interpretive centre located on the top of Observatory Hill in Victoria, BC. Here visitors have the opportunity to become acquainted with research at our parent institution, the NRC Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics. You will also enjoy telescope tours and presentations in our planetarium and multimedia theatre. In the summer, we welcome you to join us in public observations with the 1.8-m Plaskett Telescope.
Hours of Operation
The Centre of the Universe is closed to drop-in visits until the spring to focus on school group visits. To book your elementary, middle or high school class, or your college or university students, for an exclusive daytime program, check out our school programs page and call or email us today!

Skygazing
Each week, NRC's Ken Tapping will lead you in discovering something new going on in the skies above you. Dr. Tapping is an astronomer at the NRC Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics, based at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory, Penticton, BC.
Dr. Tapping pens these articles as one of his many activities to promote public understanding of astronomy.
