Bioremediation of Contaminated Sites

Bioremediation uses microorganisms to remove harmful or hazardous substances from a site. As a cost-effective and green technology, bioremediation is increasingly being applied to environmental contamination problems. The main goal of the bioremediation work performed by the NRC-BRI Environmental Microbiology Group is to better understand and control the microbiological processes associated with the biological breakdown of environmental contaminants. Remediation problems that have remained difficult to solve are of particular interest, including low permeability matrices and contaminants that are not easily accessible to microorganisms.
