Post-Occupancy Evaluation of Green Buildings

Objectives

To demonstrate the value of green building practices in terms of improved indoor environmental quality and decreased energy use, by evaluating a selection of new or renovated buildings.

Background

The limited published data on post-occupancy evaluations of green buildings suggests that predicted improvements are often only partly realized. Green building rating systems therefore require better post-occupancy data so that they can be modified to encourage design options that work, and discourage those that do not.

Statement of Work

  • Review existing work on the post-occupancy energy and indoor environment performance of green buildings.
  • Conduct an enhanced analysis of data collected by the US Green Buildings Council and the New Buildings Institute on the energy performance of more than 100 LEED-certified buildings, and compared to the general US commercial building stock.
  • Compare physical indoor environment measurements, energy performance and occupant satisfaction in green and conventional buildings. Use this information to identify which aspects of green building design are working, and which aspects need improvement.

Expected Outcomes

  • A series of technical reports and scientific articles documenting the findings
  • Guidance on protocols for post-occupancy evaluation of indoor environment quality
