PWGSC innovative open offices project (PuWOO)

Under contract from PWGSC, the Acoustics group has been investigating factors affecting speech propagation in team-style work areas in open-plan offices. In such work areas, there are no or only minimal barriers between occupants. The orientation of the occupants, the sound-absorptive properties of the surfaces, and the voice levels of the occupants are of major importance.

The project has investigated:

  • sound propagation in actual offices,
  • angular variation of sound propagation from human speakers,
  • the voice levels of speakers in actual offices,
  • the effects of sound absorbing materials and bookshelves added to low barriers between occupants.
