This project consists of a comprehensive literature review and two separate experiments (see below). The focus is on behavioural outcomes (such as worker performance and satisfaction) as the key measures of the quality of office lighting design.
For the experimental phases of the project we created a mock-up open-plan office space in NRC-IRC's Indoor Environment Research Facility (IERF). The mock-up consisted of six identical workstations, each of floor area 65 sq. ft. (6.04 sq. m), separated by 66" (1.68 m) partitions, and was designed to be representative of current mid-grade office space. Participants worked in this space under various lighting conditions for a full day, and their performance and satisfaction were recorded.
