Principles of Healthy Lighting

Light exposure through the eyes influences biology and behaviour in addition to stimulating vision. Findings from physiology and medicine showing that light can be used to treat some clinical disorders (such as seasonal affective disorder and sleep disorders) has sparked interest in the possibility that there might also be ways to use light in everyday applications to improve general health and well-being. NRC-IRC's Lighting Group led a technical committee of the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (International Commission on Illumination) in completing the first-ever technical report summarizing the state of knowledge in this field. NRC-IRC continues to develop new research addressing this topic.
