Entertainment-Based System for Visual Construction Technology Transfer

Objectives

To facilitate knowledge transfer to the Canadian construction industry by developing simple and affordable computer based vision tools.

Background

Traditional vision-based information technologies are often too expensive and require too much specialized knowledge to be effectively used as educational or technology transfer tools in the construction industry. This project assessed and exploited the capabilities of widely available and easily accessible home entertainment equipment, such as video game consoles and high definition televisions, as a delivery platform for these tools.

Statement of Work

  • Developed an Xbox 360™ application that demonstrates proper techniques for installing windows in the building envelope, including the use of an animated avatar.
  • Implemented a scenario to illustrate a health and safety issue.

Expected Outcomes

  • A prototype window installation guide running on Xbox 360™.
  • A final report including an assessment of the benefits and drawbacks of using home entertainment systems as a technology transfer tool, and an outline of future activities.

Partners

Trades and Apprenticeship Dept, Connestoga College. Professors Kathy Hibbert and Ron Hansen, Faculty of Education, University of Western Ontario acted as external advisors.

Start/Expected Completion Dates

This project began in 2008 and was completed in 2009.
