VMC++ is a Monte Carlo package optimized for radiation treatment planning. By restricting the energy range to that typical of radiation therapy and the materials to those representative of human tissue a significant speed improvement can be achieved over that of a general purpose Monte Carlo code.
The directional bremsstrahlung variance reduction technique, (DBS) with a series of additional improvements, was implemented in the VMC++ package and named DRS. VMC++ with DRS permits extremely fast photon beam treatment head simulations, so that the simulation time in the treatment head is short compared to the simulation time of particle transport through a patient geometry. This development will be potentially very useful for the implementation of photon Monte Carlo in commercial treatment planning systems.
VMC++ can be licensed from NRC. For several years, Nucletron has had it integrated into their treatment planning system for electron beams and is in use by clinics throughout the world.
