Natural Health Products

To address aspects of the safety, quality and efficacy of Natural Health Products (NHPs) the Chemical Metrology group is contributing to an international effort to validate analytical methodologies and provide Certified Reference Materials for the determination of biomarkers and active ingredients in NHPs. The current focus is on purification of ginsenosides from ginseng and alkaloids from goldenseal, two economically important Canadian medicinal crops.

In addition, collaborative research efforts with both Canadian and international partners in academia and industry are underway to identify bioactive components, function, efficacy and metabolism of NHPs. These include: the biosynthesis of 13C analogs of omega-3 fatty acids to study uptake and metabolism (Université de Sherbrooke), the bioassay guided fractionation of ginseng to determine anti-inflamatory components (University of South Carolina) and the biosynthesis of 13C labelled conjugated linoleic and linolenic acids to study anti-metabolic syndrome and anti-inflammatory functions (National Taiwan University).
