Bioprospecting for Bioactive Natural Products and Conducting Metabolomics Studies
The overall goal of this project is to discover bioactive compounds from local/regional or Canadian native bioresources, to add value for underutilized natural compounds through innovative processes, and to understand bioactivity relevant metabolism and multi-component interactions of natural health products or nutraceuticals. Building a focused and targeted Atlantic Canada plant extracts library for collaborative screening and evaluating dietary TCM herbal components for bioactivities, particularly in neuroprotection and obesity/diabetes is an on-going effort within the project. Natural compounds isolated or sourced that have interesting structures and bioactivities will also be used as starting materials for microbial or enzymatic transformation to produce unique structural analogs for further bioactivity testing.
