Cultivation of Selected Seaweeds for their use as Commercially Important Sources of Human Functional Foods (collaborative research agreement with Acadian Seaplants)

The project involves the commercialization of two new seaweed food products with functional food properties and the development of methods for rapidly screening potential candidate seaweed species for land-based cultivation.

A functional food is a foodstuff that provides both basic nutritional value and further enhanced health or medical benefits.

The two new functional food products will be sourced from seaweeds cultivated at Acadian Seaplants Limited’s (ASL) land-based facility at Charlesville, Nova Scotia. Research will also take place at NRC-IMB in Halifax and Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro.
