Biochemical mechanisms in absorption, retention and metabolism of dietary astaxanthin in salmonid fishes
The primary objectives of this research are to determine factors limiting the absorption, intestinal metabolism and transport, in Atlantic salmon, of one of the major carotenoid pigments use in their feeds to achieve the red colour flesh – astaxanthin (Ax). The research, funded by DSM Nutritional Products in Switzerland, will also help develop strategies to improve absorption and retention of Ax. In particular, the role of other nutrients (e.g. vitamins E and A) will be studied. An additional objective is to evaluate Ax transport in an in vitro cell culture model.
