Nefertiti is a state-of-the-art solution for 2D image databases.

Nefertiti is a 2D management system that automatically describes the composition, texture and colour distribution of 2D images by applying sophisticated techniques in order to capture the most important features in an incredibly compact descriptor or index. Nefertiti can search the index database in almost no time in order to retrieve similar 2D images by applying a content-based approach and the query-by-example paradigm.

Nefertiti is based on a proprietary technology and is foreseen for applications like cultural heritage databases, 3D models texture databases, forensic and catalogues. For instance, one can search a museum database, in order to find a painting of a given style or period. This visually intuitive, language-independent query system empowers the user to base his/her query on the entirety of the multimedia content, not only on an incomplete text description as in most traditional approaches. Nefertiti is currently being used in the field of cultural heritage at the Louvre Museum through a collaboration with the C2RMF (Centre de recherche et de restauration des musées de France).

The Nefertiti project began in January 2004, and is part of the group's ongoing research to provide scientific technologies and techniques to collaborative partners in other disciplines by employing its expertise in visual sensing and processing.

We have been able to develop useful patented technology for content-based management and retrieval of 2D images in collaboration with such partners as:

  • C2RMF - Centre de recherche et de restauration des musées de France, Musée du Louvre
  • SITE (University of Ottawa)
