Solenoid Coils

Solenoid coils (Figure 1) are commonly used in vertical magnetic fields for imaging of the head or extremities.

These coils provide better homogeneity of the RF field in the area of interest than surface coils and are used as volume coils.

Whole body solenoids (Figure 2) are also used occasionally as RF coils for pelvis imaging and cervical spine imaging.
