Researchers from NRC-IBD (West) are collaborating with a number of groups to develop the use of novel contrast agents for the study of biochemical or cellular changes associated with specific molecular processes.
One such collaboration, established with the University of Calgary, uses a novel contrast agent (GdsLex) targeted to specific receptors involved in the neuroinflammatory process to image this process following stroke in mice (see figure). This holds promise for the development of MR contrast agents for molecular imaging of injurious processes and their treatment in patients.
Other collaborations include the development of novel Gd-perfluorocarbon based targeted contrast agents in association with the NRC-Institute for Biological Sciences and iron oxide nanoparticles in association with the University of Calgary, NRC-Biotechnology Research Institute, and NRC-Industrial Materials Institute.
