The NRC-IBD MR Technology Group designs and manufactures gradient coils, one of the most important parts on MRI systems. Gradient coils generate linear magnetic field in imaging volume for slice selection, frequency encoding, and phase encoding during MRI scans.
A high quality gradient magnetic field plays a key role in acquiring superior MRI images. The group designs both non-shielded gradient coils and active shielded gradient coils with water-cooling systems.
An advanced algorithm has been developed to calculate the best current flow patterns in gradient coils with optimized gradient magnetic field linearity volume, gradient efficiency, rise time, etc. gx Current flow patter GX Coil GX gradient coil from calculated current flow pattern to product
In recent years, NRC-IBD has achieved significant success in the development of gradient coils that meet the requirements of different research and commercial MRI systems.
Gradient coils made by NRC are integral elements of several commercial 0.35T MRI systems in Canada. Another NRC-IBD built coil, an active shielded gradient coil, is being used on a 0.08 T MRI system in a university in Poland for noble gas image research.
NRC-IBD is now developing new gradient coils for dedicated MRI systems that will be installed at universities in Canada.
