Air Data Calibration and Measurement

Simultaneous Calibration of Air Data Systems (SCADS)

The Flight Research Laboratory has developed an air data in-flight calibration technique using a 5-hole probe to measure air data parameters, combined with special flight patterns and accurate DGPS positioning information.

The wind box shown below is used to perform the calibration including the use of Beta sweeps, accel and then 2-3-1-1 control input steps with 3 repeats. The system has been implemented on a number of laboratory aircraft and can in principle be used on any aircraft requiring accurate air data calibration. Several refinements of the technique are now under development including RT-SCADS and RAMI using DGPS information.
