JWST - James Webb Space Telescope

JWST logo

CSA is a partner with NASA and ESA in this large space telescope project and funds NRC-HIA support for Science team activities and technical work by ATRG-V members. JWST is a major facility that will supersede the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes and will be launched into a distant orbit in June 2014.

Canada is guaranteed a minimum of 5% of JWST observing, as well as participation in guaranteed instrument team observing.

Project leader and Canadian project scientist: John Hutchings, NRC-HIA

NRC-HIA Science team members: Doug Johnstone, Laura Ferrarese, Chris Willott, plus 7 non-NRC scientists

NRC-HIA technical team: John Pazder, Tim Hardy

ATRG-V members are involved in the provision of the FGS (Fine Guidance sensor) instrument for the telescope. This will provide the Fine Guidance information for the telescope tracking and also a tunable narrow band imaging science instrument. The FGS is being fabricated under contract from CSA by ComDev, with ongoing NRC-HIA participation.

FGS-Guider

The FGS-Guider must report guide star positions to a precision of 5mas or better 16 times per second. It must also have a 95% probability of finding a useable guide star anywhere in the sky, and be fully redundant.

The FGS-TF (tunable filter) is a separate instrument from the FGS-guider, but housed in the same box. This instrument images about 5 sq arcmin of sky at wavelengths in the range 1.5 to 5 microns. Within this range, a narrow band filter can be tuned to give a spectral resolution of ~100. This is a unique scientific capability in JWST and will complement the other 3 science instruments provided by ESA and NASA.
