FUSE - Far Ultraviolet Spectrographic Explorer

CSA is a partner with NASA and CNES in this space telescope, in orbit since 1999. NRC-HIA is funded to support science and operations and for technical support.

Project leader and Canadian project scientist: John Hutchings

Science and Operations: Alex Fullerton and Pierre Chayer (through UVic)

Technical team: Tim Hardy (included Chris Morbey and Rick Murowinski in past)

Technical Overview

The Far Ultraviolet Spectrographic Explorer (FUSE) is an orbiting telescope jointly run by NASA, CSA, and CNES (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales). The Canadian contribution is the Fine Error Sensor (FES) camera system for tracking the telescope, and was built by ComDev with technical advice and design work from the NRC-HIA team. This team consists of John Hutchings (Canadian project scientist), Rick Murowsinki and Tim Hardy (detector electronics, software and data handling), Chris Morbey (optical design), and others as needed. The satellite was launched in 1999 and has been operating since.

The NRC-HIA team continues to work with CSA in supporting operations and software upgrades, and John Hutchings supervises two CSA-funded operations scientists at Johns Hopkins University. FUSE serves the research needs of scientists throughout Canada. NRC-HIA organized and hosted the FUSE 5-year science symposium held in July 2004, which attracted 160 scientists from many countries.

The Centre of the Universe houses a model of the FUSE telescope and exhibits the spare FES camera.
