The Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS) began in 1995, drawing on new and archival data in the radio continuum and spectral lines of atomic hydrogen (HI) and carbon monoxide (CO), as well as mid-infrared data (IRAS), to investigate in detail the interstellar medium in our Galaxy. DRAO provided the key data product for the survey, in the form of 408 and 1420 MHz radio continuum images and HI data cubes. The first phase (1995–2000) of the survey spanned 74 degrees of the Galactic Plane in the outer Galaxy, with subsequent second (2000–04) and third (2004–08) phases nearly doubling that coverage to 135 degrees.

The success of the first phase inspired similar projects using telescopes in the USA and Australia to survey most of the regions of the Galaxy not visible from DRAO. Together, these projects formed the International Galactic Plane Survey (IGPS), led by Canada, and covered over 90% of the volume of the Galaxy, giving an unprecedented look at the interstellar medium in our Galaxy.
