DRAO Correlators

DRAO Correlator

DRAO correlator

Two new correlators were designed and built by DRAO staff as part of the major upgrade to the DRAO Synthesis Telescope in the late 1980s and early 1990s. These were the C21 correlator that simultaneously processed four 7.5 MHz continuum bands on 21 baselines, outputting co- and cross-polar correlations to allow for polarimetry, and the S21 correlator, a 256-channel spectrometer that processed co-polar data from 12 baselines with selectable bandwidths up from 0.125 to 4 MHz. These correlators together enabled the high successful Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS), data from which have provided an unprecedented view of the interstellar medium in our Galaxy.
