Decaying Sea Ice: How it Happens and What it Means for Shipping

Traditionally, property measurements of sea ice are conducted in mid-winter or early spring, when the ice is still cold and strong. Those measurements provide an understanding of ice in its winter state, however they do not inform mariners about the state of the ice in late summer, when most ships transit Arctic waters. To fill that gap, several seasons of measurements were made on decaying landfast first year ice in the central Canadian Arctic and offshore Labrador.

Measurements have been made on both first-year ice and multi-year ice. The results are being used by the Canadian Ice Service to produce an "Ice Strength Chart" for the Arctic, and by Transport Canada in their Arctic Pollution Prevention Regulations.
