Beach Stabilization, Coney Island, NY

Three-dimensional physical model studies were conducted in CHC's Large Area Basin to evaluate various design options for a beach stabilization/rehabilitation project at the western end of Coney Island , New York . The studies were funded by the New York district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and performed in collaboration with Moffatt and Nichol Engineers Inc. The main objectives were to provide valuable design information on the following important issues:

  • stability and performance of the proposed rubble-mound structures;
  • wave-induced nearshore circulation patterns under operational and storm conditions;
  • beach stability and sediment transport under various flow conditions, including combined waves and tidal currents; and
  • potential response of the beach fill over time.

Mobile bed physical model of beach stabilization at Coney Island

A three-dimensional physical model of the foreshore and shoreline at the southwestern tip of Coney Island was designed and constructed at a geometric scale of 1:35 . The beach was modelled with a mobile bed of fine sand that deformed naturally in response to wave forcing. The model was fitted with systems to generate waves and tidal currents, and equipped with instrumentation to measure these flows. The physical model provided a reasonably good simulation of the hydrodynamic and sedimentary processes at the site.

These investigations generated a large quantity of valuable information on many aspects of the hydraulic performance of the proposed beach rehabilitation project. This information has been used to support the detailed design of the project. These studies also provided the validation and verification required to help bring the proposal to life.
