NINT Principal Investigator, Supramolecular Nanoscale Assembly

Professor, Department of Chemistry, University of Alberta

Dr. Hicham Fenniri leads ground-breaking work in organic chemistry as leader of the Supramolecular Nanoscale Assembly Group at the National Institute for Nanotechnology, and is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Alberta.

Dr. Fenniri's research is at the interface of supramolecular and dynamic chemistry with the aim of developing self-assembled, complex supramolecular structures with programmable properties. These activities led to the design of molecular structures and systems that have a wide range of applications in nano-electronics, drug design and delivery, and materials science.

Current SNAG research includes: investigation of self-assembly's underlying physical concepts and their applications, development of rosette nanotubes as a scaffold for molecular electronics, drug display and delivery, and as materials with tuneable chemical and physical properties, and spectroscopically encoded polymers for sensing, drug discovery, and biomedical diagnostics.

Dr. Fenniri is the author of over 45 publications, and holds 8 patents. He has given over 90 invited lectures, including 3 named lectures (Yale, Regensburg University - twice), and contributed over 150 papers at major conferences.

He held three Visiting Professorships at Regensburg University, Germany (2002, 2003) and University of Colorado. He is on the editorial board of Nanobiotechnology and the International Journal of Nanomedicine, and he is on the board of editors of the Journal of Biomedicine and Biotechnology.
