NINT Principal Investigator, Nano Life Sciences
Professor and Chair, Department of Chemistry / Group Leader, Bioanalytical Microsystems, University of Alberta
Dr. Jed Harrison is researching "enabling technologies" for proteomics and genomic research with a grant from the NRC's Genomics and Health Initiative (GHI). He conducts research in the fields of analytical chemistry, capillary electrophoresis, immunoassay, micromachining, and lab-on-a-chip technology.
Dr. Harrison's lab-on-a-chip research aims at producing tools for biologists to work with cells and other micro- and nanoscale structures of living organisms.
Recent research successes for his group:
- Cell adhesion, to test drug candidates for anti-inflammatory ability;
- Electroporation, the perforation of living cells to inject biochemically active species with an electric field;
- Self-assembled monolayers which can sample bacterial cells;
- a microfluidic pump that separates rare cells out of blood, and
- Magnetohydrodynamic pumping using self-assembled gold microwires as electrical brushes.
The group also works on proteomics research. The current goal is to create a chip integrating protein preparation for mass spectral analysis.
Dr. Harrison has editorial positions on the following publications: Biomedical Microdevices, Journal of Separation Science, and Lab on a Chip. He served as Chair of the Micro-Total Analysis Conference Steering Committee from 2000-2005, and is currently President of the succeeding organization, the Chemical and Biological Microsystems Society. He holds 9 patents, has co-authored 175 published papers and has given over 200 invited lectures.
