NRC-IRC's Fire Research program develops methods and technologies for improving the fire safety design of buildings and transportation systems, enhancing fire detection and suppression systems, and reducing the risks and costs of fire in Canada.
Active Fire Protection and Materials Properties
This group carries out research on fire detection, fire suppression, and smoke management, and investigates the properties of materials as they relate to fire performance of systems and assemblies.
Fire Resistance and Risk Management
This group works to advance technology for the fire resistance of structural building elements, characterization of real fires and the various parameters considered in assessing fire risks and human behaviour in fire emergencies. The emphasis is on facilitating the construction industry's move to performance-based fire safety design.
Research Facilities
The Fire Research program has excellent facilities – small-, medium- and full-scale – which are adaptable to a wide range of research projects, including column, wall and floor test furnaces, and a large burn hall/smoke tower complex. A new joint facility with Carleton University has been established for the study of atrium and transportation-related issues such as tunnel fires.
