Phycotoxins are a diverse group of toxins produced by various aquatic plants in marine and fresh waters throughout the world. Marine phycotoxins are produced by a small number of marine algae and microorganisms. Freshwater phycotoxins are often the result of blooms of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae).
