With the rapid growth of the Internet and other network shared information, computers have access to large amounts of text. With that rise there has been an increase in the demand for systems that can automatically extract useful knowledge from that text.
Companies are increasingly realizing the benefit of using text mining tools to harness the information in unstructured data. Important information is often in textual form, such as medical records, journal articles, blogs, and internal reports. Because there is so much text available, the useful knowledge in such files is difficult to find, access, analyze or use.
In the NRC Institute for Information Technology (NRC-IIT) Interactive Information program, researchers focus on the research, development and application of techniques to enhance access to information. Specifically, the program answers the demand for text mining through the development of techniques and methods for mining unstructured, semi-structured and fully structured textual data.
