Data and Text Mining

In the NRC Institute for Information Technology (NRC-IIT) Data and Text Mining program, researchers focus on the research, development and application of techniques to enhance access to information.

The research is driven by the notion that as ever-increasing electronic stores of information become available, so too should intelligent software that is able to find what users need to know.

Researchers approach the problem of information access in three general ways:

  1. The computer works alone, using heuristics and statistics to extract useful information.
  2. Users guide the computational search interactively to result in better answers than either computer or human could find alone.
  3. User collaboration is promoted. In this case, the computer(s) primarily mediates the communication between (potentially remote) users.

The research projects being conducted combine these approaches to advance the scientific study of:

  • machine learning
  • human computer interfaces
  • natural language processing
  • collaborative computing
