Technologies for Sustainable Oil Sands Development
The Canadian oil sands industry is forecast to invest over $60 billion of capital during the next decade to increase production of synthetic crude oil. At the same time, petrochemical industries are investing to minimize the environmental impacts of resource recovery, upgrading and the refining process.
NRC-ICPET’s research teams represent a unique combination of scientific and engineering research capabilities. They deal with the fundamentals of bitumen chemistry, along with feedstock processing and upgrading, downstream refining, fuel use and engine technologies.
NRC-ICPET helps address the technological challenges related to:
- Bitumen extraction, processing and upgrading
- Fuel chemistry and emissions
- Characterization of oil sands ore
