Chemical Technologies for Biomass Upgrading

As the world’s energy demands continue to grow, Canada and others have realized the need to shift energy production more and more towards renewable sources. As a result, in partnership with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, the NRC is co-leading the National Bioproducts Program, which contributes to the national priorities of sustainable energy and environment.

NRC-ICPET research targets the development of selected, value-added and novel biomaterials, as well as technologies for the separation and purification of new bioproducts. The overarching objective of this research is to help industry move from conventional to renewable and sustainable feedstock, products and processes.

NRC-ICPET’s research and experimental facilities are targeted to developing:

  • Membrane-based separation technologies for the treatment of bio-derived liquids and gasses
  • Effective integration of biomass-derived energy solutions including fuel cell-based CHP (combined heat and power) systems
  • Select value-added products of pyrolysis
