Neuroscience research

NRC-IBD’s Neuroscience Research Program focuses on translational neuroscience, with the goal of moving Canada’s wealth in brain research directly into diagnostics for clinical and commercial sectors. NRC research is firmly embedded into clinical environments: our advanced biomedical imaging expertise enables us to integrate with the expertise and facilities in major hospitals (e.g., radiology, neurology, neurosurgery, and psychiatry). This unique situation facilitates fundamental advances in functional, spectroscopic, and cellular/molecular imaging.

More importantly, we convert these innovations into new medical devices and technologies, improving diagnostics for Canadians affected by conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, stroke, brain injury, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and autism.

Our clinically embedded technologies include high-field MRI (3T, 4T, 7T, 9.4T), high-density EEG (64- and 128- channel arrays), advanced magnetoencephalography (306 channel MEG), transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), and a host of related capabilities ranging from neurobiological labs to computational data analysis platforms.

Major clinical research projects include presurgical functional mapping for brain tumours and epilepsy, biomarker identification and molecular imaging in Alzheimer’s disease and stroke, and neurocognitive assessment for a wide variety of neurological and psychiatric conditions.

NRC-IBD’s neuroscience efforts involve extensive collaboration within NRC as well as with biotech’s academic, medical, and private sectors. Our researchers patent and publish research advances and actively work to eliminate barriers to clinical collaborations, primarily through strong partnerships with industry.

NRC’s technology cluster initiative has been instrumental in catalyzing NRC-IBD’s neuroscience program, which extends from Nova Scotia to Alberta. Through our national network, NRC-IBD is translating Canada’s long-standing strength in neuroscience into tangible, real world impacts - for benefits that are rooted here but extend far beyond our borders.
