NRC-IBD’s Magnetic Resonance Technology Program develops magnetic resonance technology in four main areas: low-field, permanent magnet based technologies; high-field, superconducting magnet based technologies; gradient-free imaging technologies; and image-guided robotic surgery. The program creates and develops novel technology; improves images and acquisition times; and develops low field magnetic resonance applications to improve the detection, characterization, and monitoring of diseases and disorders for the benefit of Canadians. These technologies and prototypes are transferred to Canadian companies for commercialization. NRC-IBD’s technologies and techniques have the potential to play an important role as part of a cost containment strategy for improved management of chronic disease. This is particularly true since the technologies are non- or minimally-invasive in nature, resulting in shorter hospital stays, and thus lower overall costs to the health care system. Improved screening methods offer earlier diagnosis, minimizing therapy and improving life expectancy.
