IAR has developed a special expertise in modern flight test and parameter estimation techniques, as they apply to modeling the fundamental flight dynamics characteristics of aircraft. In collaboration with the University of Toronto's UTIAS, IAR has developed a Canadian competence in modern parameter estimation techniques.

This expertise is now being exploited by CAE Electronics Ltd., a Canadian company and world leader in flight simulators. CAE and IAR collaborated in the development of the mathematical model for use in sophisticated flight simulators built by CAE. IAR provided the expertise and led the major tasks of flight test instrumentation, flight testing and model development.

All necessary data to validate the aircraft model to meet U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and European Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA) Level-D standards can be gathered. The FRL-CAE partnership produced simulator mathematical models for the Bombardier Dash 8 Series 100 & 300, the Bombardier Challenger CL-601, the Gulfstream G-IV aircraft, and the Citation Bravo, as well as the Bell 412, Bell 212 and Puma helicopters. The Gulfstream program represented a first for away-from-base instrumentation and flight test, with the IAR team working from Gulfstream's facilities in Savannah, Georgia, USA.

IAR, for its part, develops and retains new high-level knowledge and skills in advanced flight mechanics, maintaining its position as a centre of flight mechanics expertise for domestic and international industry and government clients. Methods of instrumentation, calibration, flight testing and modeling are being continuously improved and refined for future opportunities.
