Rail Division

Detailed Image of Train Rail Bearing

The railroad industry in North America and abroad today faces unprecedented challenges.

It's a time of tough competition among rail companies – and between rail and other modes of transportation. Margins are thin, but the industry must meet growing demands for improved performance and safety. In this environment, the search is relentless for innovations and improvements that will get costs down and margins up.

A Way To Solve Challenging Problems
Since the mid-1960s, the Centre for Surface Transportation Technology has helped a long list of Canadian, U.S. and international railway clients by providing research, development and engineering solutions.

To expand and improve services to this important sector, CSTT recently coalesced all of its railway capabilities into a unified Division. As a result, major railways, transit companies, car and component manufacturers, and regulatory agencies now make even greater use of Rail Division services to solve challenging engineering problems, design maintenance solutions, achieve business goals, and meet operational needs.

Industry leaders such as Canadian Pacific, Trinity, PORTEC, Kelsan and American Steel Foundries trust us to develop solutions in the areas of:

  • structures
  • dynamics
  • vibration
  • stability
  • control
  • product development
  • wear and fatigue
  • asset management
  • training
  • maintenance support
  • rail/wheel system management – and more.

A Growing Service Set
The Division's growing set of services includes...

  • impartial third-party testing and analysis,
  • structural certification testing,
  • prototyping of novel components,
  • implementing new maintenance practices, and
  • field testing anywhere in the world.

For some clients, we have become a strategic advisor offering a window on new technologies able to improve both performance and margins. Our experienced engineers and technologists serve each client with impartiality and commercial security - critical in today's competitive business environment.

CSTT's Rail Division has helped railways and transit organizations around the world implement industry best practices in wheel and rail management.
