The railroad industry in North America and abroad today faces unprecedented challenges.
It's a time of tough competition among rail companies – and between rail and other modes of transportation. Margins are thin, but the industry must meet growing demands for improved performance and safety. In this environment, the search is relentless for innovations and improvements that will get costs down and margins up.

Since the mid-1960s, the Centre for Surface Transportation Technology has helped a long list of Canadian, U.S. and international railway clients by providing research, development and engineering solutions.
To expand and improve services to this important sector, CSTT recently coalesced all of its railway capabilities into a unified Division. Facilities For Every Need
At CSTT's Ottawa campus, facilities include:
- a rail vehicle impact ramp,
- a rail vehicle squeeze and tension frame,
- a vehicle vibration facility,
- a full-scale climatic engineering chamber, and
- wheel and bearing simulation
Together, these facilities provide all of the resources required to do car and lading certifications.
